The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department is the oldest department at Al Ghurair University, as it started operating in 2007, following a long tenure as the Etisalat University College in Sharjah. This long history means that our department has over 900 alumni, many of whom are now enjoying leading positions in industry, government, and academia.

Our current academic offerings include three Bachelor’s degrees, in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Computer Engineering. All three programs are now enjoying full ABET accreditation. At the graduate level, we offer well established and internationally acknowledged Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Without a doubt, our educational and research programs make our department a pillar of Al Ghurair University’s academic offerings and a key part of its history and future.
Currently, we have over 400 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students, and we are proud to have graduated several Emirati PhDs. Some of them have joined our faculty as Assistant Professors, adding their contributions to those of their world-class colleagues, who are drawn from top universities in the US, Canada, and several European countries.
The ECE Department is not just teaching the next generation of industry leaders. Our faculty and students are involved in a wide range of research endeavors, in areas as diverse as wireless communications, cloud computing and data analytics, cyber security, medical imaging, nanotechnology, chip design, robotics, computers, renewable energy and smart grids, just to mention a few. Our department makes significant contributions to the University’s Research centers, including the Al Ghurair University Semiconductor Research Center (KSRC), the Etisalat BT Innovation Center (EBTIC), the Visual Signal Analysis and Processing Center (VSAP), the Information Security Center (ISC), and the Robotics Institute (AGURI), in addition to contributing to the research clusters in energy and information technology.
Due to our department’s activity and focus, we have drawn attention and support from a variety of industry giants, including the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), Mubadala, the Dubai Technology Development Company (TDC), EARTH, ADEC, and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fund, to name but a few.
I look forward to what the future brings, and we are eager to continue our growth and expansion, as Al Ghurair University develops as a regional leader in science, research, and technology and contributes to the building of a knowledge-based economy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Thanos Stouraitis
Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
All programs offered by the ECE department are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education. Moreover, The ECE undergraduate degree programs in Communication, Electrical and Electronic, and Computer Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.
ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
