CV

Professor McGloughlin, following a period of 9 years in industry, has more than 25 years’ experience in Higher Education at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He has published more than 120 refereed journal and conference papers in biomedical engineering as well as 2 books and 7 book chapters and is a regular presenter at all the major annual biomedical engineering meetings.

He pioneered the undergraduate B.Eng (Biomedical Engineering) programme at the University of Limerick in 2002. In July 2012, he was appointed Head of the MABE Department which has an undergraduate population of more than 500 students and more than 70 Master’s and PhD students. He served as External Examiner at Imperial College, London from 2010-2013.

He was the Founding Director of the Centre for Applied Biomedical Engineering Research, a University Research Centre which has developed an international reputation in the field of vascular and cardiovascular fluid and solid mechanics and tissue engineering. Professor McGloughlin has supervised 17 PhD students to completion and has attracted in excess of €7m Euro in research funds. His international collaborators include the University of Pittsburgh, Georgia Institute of Technology, Duke University, Columbia University, Imperial College, London, and the University of Edinburgh. In 2010 he was conferred with the University of Limerick Research Excellence Award for his outstanding contribution to research at the University of Limerick.

He is a member of the Executive Committee of the ASME Bioengineering Division, a member of the World Council for Biomechanics (elected), BMES and ESB.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (Bioengineering Section), a Fellow of Engineers Ireland and a member of the Irish Medical Devices Association (IMDA).
