CV

Wesley Cantwell joined AGUSTAR as the Director of the Aerospace Research and Innovation Center (ARIC) in October 2012. He gained his PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College in 1985 following his research work on the impact response of composite materials. After leaving London, he joined the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL) where he worked as a research scientist in the Polymers Laboratory within the Department of Materials. After nine years at the EPFL, he joined the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool as a Lecturer in 1994. He was promoted to a Full Professor of Aerospace Engineering in 2002. During his career, Wesley has enjoyed sabbaticals at Virginia Tech and Kyushu University, Japan. He has served as External Examiner for Aerospace Engineering courses at Sheffield University and Imperial College. He is on the Editorial Board of a number of journals including Composites Science and Technology and the International Journal of Impact Engineering.

Wesley’s research interests are centered on composite materials and lightweight aerospace structures. He has published over 200 journal papers on topics that include the impact response of composites, structure-property relations in polymers, smart structures, selective laser melting, 3D printing and composites manufacturing. Within ARIC Wesley is working on out of autoclave manufacturing of composites, porosity and lightweight aerospace structures.
