Our current academic offerings include three Bachelor’s degrees, in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Computer Engineering. All three programs are now enjoying full ABET accreditation. At the graduate level, we offer well established and internationally acknowledged Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Without a doubt, our educational and research programs make our department a pillar of Al Ghurair University’s academic offerings and a key part of its history and future.

Currently, we have over 400 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students, and we are proud to have graduated several Emirati PhDs. Some of them have joined our faculty as Assistant Professors, adding their contributions to those of their world-class colleagues, who are drawn from top universities in the US, Canada, and several European countries.

The ECE Department is not just teaching the next generation of industry leaders. Our faculty and students are involved in a wide range of research endeavors, in areas as diverse as wireless communications, cloud computing and data analytics, cyber security, medical imaging, nanotechnology, chip design, robotics, computers, renewable energy and smart grids, just  to mention a few.  Our department makes significant contributions to the University’s Research centers, including the Al Ghurair University Semiconductor Research Center (KSRC), the Etisalat BT Innovation Center (EBTIC), the Visual Signal Analysis and Processing Center (VSAP), the Information Security Center (ISC), and the Robotics Institute (AGURI), in addition to contributing to the research clusters in energy and information technology.

Due to our department’s activity and focus, we have drawn attention and support from a variety of industry giants, including  the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), Mubadala, the Dubai Technology Development Company (TDC), EARTH, ADEC, and the  Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Fund, to name but a few.

I look forward to what the future brings, and we are eager to continue our growth and expansion, as Al Ghurair University develops as a regional leader in science, research, and technology and contributes to the building of a knowledge-based economy.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thanos Stouraitis
Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

All programs offered by the ECE department are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education. The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) programs at Al Ghurair University prepare the students to work in a wide range of fields and choose from a variety of exciting career options.

ECE students study various courses related to computer hardware and software, wireless communications, semiconductor devices, circuit design, wireless and wired communication networks, image and video processing, and information security, among many others. Moreover, ECE plays a vital role in several other fields such as aerospace, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, oil and gas industries, and transportation.

Electrical engineers apply specialized engineering skills to the design, manufacturing, application, installation, and operation of electrical products and systems. Electrical engineering offers a broad range of research in areas as diverse as communications, systems control, biomedical engineering, electromagnetics, photonics, electronics and energy systems.

The demand for ECE graduates has been consistently growing in the technological world we currently live in. ECE is a dynamic field where new technologies are developed and integrated in our lives almost on a daily basis. Examples of recent new technologies that depend on the ECE field include the development of the smart phones and mobile computing systems such as iPads and tablets, smart homes, and intelligent transportation systems.

ECE programs are ideal for people who are passionate for solving challenging problems with the aim of serving humanity. By undertaking an ECE program, you could find yourself equipped to contribute immediately to one of the following technologies:

  • Analog and Radio Frequency Electronic Circuits: Without these, there’d be no cell phones, no WiFi, and no television.
  • Communication and Signal Processing: is concerned with the transmission, storage, and analysis of information signals.
  • Computer and Digital Systems: Humankind is advancing faster technologically than ever before with the help of computers. These digital systems are everywhere, from your dishwasher and wristwatch to the Mars rovers, and everything in between.
  • Networking: The internet is having a profound impact on society, bringing people across the world together to work collaboratively from different countries.
  • Computer Vision and Image Processing: These technologies make it possible for computers to analyze data from medical imaging devices to identify diseases. Computer vision experts teach computers how to recognize faces, while image processing people can de-blur images, extract features, and even make art.
  • Control Systems, Robotics, and Intelligent Transportation: Automation to reduce human efforts in the workplace; enhance safety in manufacturing systems, automobiles (via self-driving vehicles), and aircraft (via auto-pilots).
  • Electromagnetics, Remote Sensing, and Microwaves: Communication via radio waves is essential for mobile devices, radios, and the internet. Radio- and microwaves can also be used for sensing. The ability of microwaves to see through clouds and rain makes them very useful for measuring Earth’s climate.
  • Optics and Photonics: Using light to solve engineering problems runs the range from fiber optics to lasers for eye surgery. Photonics also includes the field of display technology from LEDs to liquid crystals to holograms.
  • Nanotechnology and Electronic Materials: Used to develop more efficient solar cells, faster transistors to run your computers and chips that can help you track your items.
  • Sustainable Energy and Power Systems: Humankind is hugely dependent on energy, but burning materials to make electricity is damaging our environment. Electrical engineers are working to create better solar cells and windmills, to harvest energy from tides and many other non-polluting sources.

Detailed admission guidelines can be found in the Undergraduate Admissions and Graduate Admissions sections.

Al Ghurair University provides attractive scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. Most UAE national students are provided a 100% tuition fees waiver. Scholarships are also available to non-UAE nationals.
